What Is a Beard Hair Transplant?

A beard hair transplant is a microsurgical procedure that relocates healthy follicles, usually harvested from the back of the scalp to the areas of the face, including the cheeks, jawline, chin, and mustache. Dr. Sajan typically uses two gold-standard techniques:

  • FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction): Individual follicles are removed with a 0.7–1 mm punch, leaving pin-prick scars nearly invisible to the naked eye.
  • FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant/strip): A narrow strip of donor skin is taken, the follicles are dissected under a microscope, and the strip scar hides beneath existing hair.

Each graft is placed at the exact angle and direction your natural beard should grow, creating coverage that looks—and behaves—like the real thing.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Beard Transplant Surgery?

You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Have patchiness, trauma scars, or genetically light facial hair
  • Possess adequate donor hair on the scalp (or, occasionally, the neck or chest)
  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker (or can quit temporarily)
  • Have realistic expectations about density and healing time

During consultation, we evaluate skin type, hair texture, and future hair-loss patterns to craft a long-term plan.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  • Arrival & local anesthesia: You’ll relax in our private OR suite; most patients stream music or nap.
  • Donor harvesting: Using FUE or FUT, we collect the required number of grafts—typically 1,200–2,000 for a full beard.
  • Recipient-site design: Tiny slits are created in preset rows that mimic the natural angles of whiskers.
  • Graft placement: Follicles are inserted with jewelers’ forceps under high-powered magnification.
  • Same-day discharge: You go home with a gentle wrap, detailed instructions, and direct access to our team.

Mild swelling peaks days 2–3, tiny crusts shed by day 10, and new hairs enter a “rest” phase before regrowing permanently around month 3–4. Most clients resume desk work within 48 hours.

Pros and Cons of a Beard Hair Transplant

Pros:

  • Permanent, natural-looking facial hair
  • Freedom to shave, trim, and style normally
  • One-time procedure; no ongoing injections or topical meds
  • Scarless (FUE) or easily hidden (FUT) donor site

Cons:

  • Up-front investment of time and money
  • Temporary shedding (“shock loss”) around week 2–4 Finite donor supply may limit ultra-dense styles
  • Minor risks of infection, numbness, or uneven growth (rare with experienced hands)

Cost of Beard Transplant in Seattle

The graft prices of our beard implants: $8 per graft. A light goatee might need 600 grafts ($4,800), while a full Viking beard could approach 2,500 grafts. Your final quote depends on:

  • graft count and density goals
  • technique selected (FUE vs. FUT)
  • complexity (scar repair vs. full augmentation)
  • anesthesia time and any combined procedures

We partner with multiple medical-credit lenders and offer interest-free plans for qualified clients. Every consultation with Dr. Sajan is complimentary.

Yes—over 95 percent of transplanted follicles survive and grow when performed by an experienced team and supported with proper after-care.

Most men wait until their mid-20s, when hormonal patterns and natural beard growth have stabilized, but older adults can also benefit.

Anyone with scars, patchy genetics, or loss from conditions like alopecia barbae, provided sufficient donor hair exists and medical conditions are well-controlled.

Under local anesthesia with, or without oral sedation, follicles are harvested (FUE or FUT), sorted, and implanted into pre-made sites following your personalized beard design.

All surgery carries risk, but complications are rare. Potential issues include infection, donor-site scarring, ingrown hairs, or uneven density, most of which are preventable and correctable.
